SciWorks@UIS puts research-grade science in the hands of students and applies it to problems that matter to families and neighborhoods across Illinois.
Based in the College of Health, Science, and Technology, SciWorks is a shared analytical laboratory equipped with advanced X-ray and mass spectrometry tools—and newly donated digital droplet PCR technology from the Discovery Partners Institute—an advanced method that can detect tiny amounts of microbial or genetic contamination in environmental samples—enabling students and faculty to analyze heavy metals, toxic materials, and pathogens in soil, water, and food.
Students in SciWorks don’t run simulations—they do the real work: mapping environmental chemicals in Granite City and Collinsville, evaluating legacy contaminants at historically impacted sites, investigating roadside pollution in Edwardsville, and delivering public science programs on water quality, environmental health, and human exposure risks.
Your gift to the SciWorks Fund helps cover the consumables, calibration supplies, field sampling kits, and travel costs that keep our students and faculty showing up in the places where science is needed most.
