In Memory of Orion Samuelson

About

Known as the “Voice of Agriculture,” Orion Samuelson (1934-2026) was the ultimate agricultural communicator throughout his remarkable career as a broadcaster. For more than six decades, he brought the story of American agriculture to life, becoming a trusted voice for generations of farmers and consumers alike.

Raised on a Wisconsin dairy farm, Orion developed a deep appreciation for agriculture that shaped his life’s work. He joined WGN Radio in 1960 and became one of the most recognizable voices in agricultural broadcasting, serving audiences for more than six decades, explaining complex issues in a way that resonated with both rural and urban audiences. His influence extended to television, where he helped launch nationally syndicated programs such as U.S. Farm Report and This Week in Agribusiness.

A passionate advocate for farmers and rural communities, Orion’s work connected audiences across rural and urban communities, helping broaden understanding of agriculture. His contributions earned him numerous honors, including an honorary Doctor of Letters degree from the University of Illinois, the University of Illinois Presidential Medallion, a National 4-H Hall of Fame Laureate, and induction into the National Radio Hall of Fame in Chicago, the highest award in the radio broadcasting industry.

In honor of Orion’s life and legacy, gifts may be made to the Orion and Gloria S. Samuelson Scholarship in Agriculture Fund, supporting future generations of students in the College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences who demonstrate academic merit and professional promise.
