In Memory of David J. Downey

David J. Downey (1941-2025) will forever be remembered as a Fighting Illini legend, still holding the Illini Men’s Basketball program’s record of 53 points in a single game. Beyond the court, Dave went on to build a successful career and business in the insurance industry. He was generous in supporting the Champaign-Urbana community in numerous ways. He served on the board of First Busey Corporation and was a lifetime member of the University of Illinois Foundation Board. He also served on the board of The News-Gazette and was, at one point, a member of the Illinois Board of Higher Education, the University of Illinois Board of Trustees, the University of Illinois Athletic Board and the University of Illinois Gies College of Business Board of Overseers.

Contributions to either the Illini Excellence Gifts Fund or the Carle Illinois College of Medicine Phyllis M. Wise Endowed Scholarship Fund will carry forward Dave’s unwavering commitment to Fighting Illini athletics and the advancement of medical education and research at the Carle Illinois College of Medicine.
